In 2021, the world generated 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste, according to the Plastic Waste Makers Index , compiled by the nonprofit Minderoo Foundation. That’s 6 million metric tons more than in 2019, when the first index was published.
This is just one more statistic that highlights the serious plastic problem the world is facing. A simple plastic bag can take up to 150 years to decompose, which is why it is very common to find this type of waste in various ecosystems.
It is in this context that in 2021, the Bariq brand, the leading PET bottle manufacturer in the Middle East and Africa, launched the “Recycle, Revive” campaign in Egypt. The action carried out by the Digitology advertising agency aimed to raise awareness about the impact of plastic waste and shed light on the victims of the use of this material, such as animals, marine creatures, trees and even humans themselves.
The campaign is made up of five images that simulate a crime scene in which the corpse is no longer present, but its silhouette remains. Thanks to this, it can be inferred that animals such as a fish, a bird and a turtle were present in that place, as well as other species such as algae and a human. The photographs also indicate the possible weapons with which the crime was committed: plastic.
The initiative recalls that plastic has a pernicious impact on aquatic ecosystems and life on land. Marine animals suffer from suffocation and strangulation as they ingest fragments of this material, which alters their health and reproduction. In addition, microplastics affect algae and aquatic organisms, thus damaging food chains and threatening biodiversity . The environmental crisis does not stop there; humans are also affected by inadvertently consuming microplastics through contaminated food.
