Bariq’s “Recycle, Revive” campaign in Egypt fights plastic pollution
Bariq’s “Recycle, Revive” campaign, launched in Egypt in 2021, aims to raise awareness about the devastating impact of plastic waste on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The initiative highlights that plastic is a threat to wildlife and biodiversity, as marine animals can suffer from suffocation and strangulation by ingesting plastic fragments, affecting their health and ability to reproduce.
The world generated 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste in 2021, according to the Plastic Waste Makers Index by the nonprofit Minderoo Foundation, representing an increase of 6 million metric tons compared to 2019.
Bariq’s campaign uses a series of images simulating crime scenes where the body is no longer present, but the silhouette of the body remains. These images depict the previous presence of marine animals such as fish, birds and turtles, as well as terrestrial species such as trees and humans. The images also point to plastic as the possible “weapon” used in these “crimes.”
The initiative highlights how plastic negatively affects aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, including the suffocation and strangulation of marine life, the damage caused by microplastics to algae and aquatic organisms, and threats to food chains and biodiversity. It also points out that humans are also at risk by inadvertently consuming microplastics through contaminated food.
The “Recycle, Revive” campaign seeks to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and reducing the use of single-use plastic to protect the environment and its inhabitants, both animals and humans.
